Can Forged Bar be used for Heads + Caps ??

Can Forged Bar be used for Heads + Caps ??

Can Forged Bar be used for Heads + Caps ??

(OP)

Can vessel Heads and Flat Ends be machined from SA182 F316L Forged Bar ?
ASME VIII states that Forged or Hot Rolled Bar can be used up to and including DN100 but Im sure I have seen other ASME vessels which have End Caps machined from up to 8" Bar.

RE: Can Forged Bar be used for Heads + Caps ??

There is a code case which speaks to this possibility.  I do not know the number offhand but there are supplemental testing requirements if bar stock (forged bar is still considered bar) is used for shells, heads, or nozzle necks.

See UG-6

RE: Can Forged Bar be used for Heads + Caps ??

Code cases 2155 and 2156

UG-14 and UG-6 disallowed the use of forged bar however the code cases above allow it if you perform additional transverse test, ultrasonically test the bar along its entire length and dye pen any weld preps before welding.

Please remember that not all Jurisdictions accept Code Cases.

Suggest you speak with your AIA prior to use. There is more to this.
