Spur Gear to Shaft Constraint

Spur Gear to Shaft Constraint

Spur Gear to Shaft Constraint

(OP)
I have a spur gear on a shaft... The gear has a 0.25" I.D. and the shaft has a 0.25" O.D... I have the gear mated onto the shaft in the proper location using the "Insert" constraint... But I cannot seem to find the proper constraint to use so that the gear and shaft are "pinned" together... Anotherwords, so that they turn together... Can anyone help?

RE: Spur Gear to Shaft Constraint

You need to create a work plane down the axis of the shaft and also the spur gear, then in the assembly, constrain the work planes to each other at any angle you wish. This will lock the two together.

RE: Spur Gear to Shaft Constraint

Another option is a motion constraint. If your intent is to rotate the gear and have the shaft rotate simultaneously this is probably a better approach because you will probably want the shaft to rotate something and you will need to use a motion constraint on it too.

I tried a motion constraint but I couldn't get the gear and shaft to be "locked" together... I'm kind of a self-taught Inventor novice, so I'm most likely not doing something correctly...

RE: Spur Gear to Shaft Constraint

Make sure your ratio is 1:1

OK... I added a rotation constraint to the shaft and the gear and they are locked together now... What confused me is that this is not a gear mesh situation, just a round shaft inside the I.D. of the gear... Thanks for the help...

RE: Spur Gear to Shaft Constraint

Glad I could help...:)
