UBC 88 & 94 Seismic Question

UBC 88 & 94 Seismic Question

UBC 88 & 94 Seismic Question

(OP)
I am reviewing some calcs for a one story building that was designed to either the '88 or '94 UBC.  IBC says that for a building with more than one structural system, the value of the Response Modification Coefficient (R) can't be greater than the least value for any system in the same direction.  Was this requirement in UBC also?  Thanks for any help you can provide.

RE: UBC 88 & 94 Seismic Question

UBC 1997 states that the entire structure is designed using the lowest R of the lateral force resisting systems used.  But it gives another option.

RE: UBC 88 & 94 Seismic Question

The requirement that you use the lowest R in the same direction was introduced in the 1994 UBC, Section 1628.3.4.  In the 1988 UBC it was not explicitly addressed.
