Problem in creating Circular pattern

Problem in creating Circular pattern

Problem in creating Circular pattern

(OP)
Hi,
I am not able to create the circular pattern of the spike in a steering wheel.
I have defined one spike and one main axis. In the circular pattern feature manager when I try to select the main axis it does not select it.
Is there anything wrong in defining the main axis?
I just defined it using the centerline.
I do not understand why it is not selecting that axis.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

RE: Problem in creating Circular pattern

Try turning on your temporary axis (View->Temporary axis), this may help.

RE: Problem in creating Circular pattern

By "spike" do you mean the radial arm connecting the outer hand-grip ring to the hub of the steering wheel?

Are you getting an error message when trying to select the axis?

Are you creating the axis by using the One Line/Edge/Axis option, and selecting a sketch entity?

When trying to pattern, are you selecting the axis from the FM tree or graphics area?

Have you tried using the Temporary Axes of the shaft as the axis of rotation.

cheers

Mirisola & Limey,
Thank you so much for your help. It worked fine, once I changed it to temporary axis.
What is the idea behind it?
Why doesn't it work when I create it by "centerline" option and create one axis?

Thank you,

RE: Problem in creating Circular pattern

To be honest, it should work; I just did it. It may have something to do with the way you created the axis. Do you happen to have any filters turned on (F5)?

Can you explain how you are doing this?

cheers

Mirisola,
I am not turning on any filters.
First I create one centerline on my sketch and name it as main axis.In the next sketch I create one semicircle for hub and one complete circle for steering wheel/rim.
Then I revolve it around the main axis.
Then I create one rectangular sketch on the hub and one spiline from the center of the rectangle to some point on the wheel. Then I swept the Base/boss and create one spike.
But then when I go for creating circular pattern of the spike or radial arm I can not select the main axis.

I solved it by your suggestion as temporary axis.

Thanks a lot,

RE: Problem in creating Circular pattern

I think I can shed some light on the confusion.

As far as I know,
You can 'Revolve' a sketch around a line (in the same sketch or another)
However, a pattern must be created about an axis; not a line from a skecth. (Just because you named your sketch "Main-Axis" doesn't make it an axis, it is still just a sketched line)

This is why the hub (revolve) can be created about the sketch line you created, while the Spikes (circular pattern) wont let you select the sketch line.

The solution, as you already have heard, is to pattern around an axis.

1) As discussed above, 'View'->'Temp axis' and use that

or 2) 'Insert'->'Reference Geometry'->'Axis' and select the sketched line. This will make a true axis along the same position of the sketched line. (This is good if you didn't have the hub feature and therfore wouldn;t have a temp axis in the model)

Thank you Lou.
This makes sense now.

Thanks a lot,
