Unrated Appliances

(OP)
Hi Folks,

Professionally, I'm not usually involved in UL issues, but I'm looking into the subject as a result of a personal appliance purchase.

I picked up an automatic water distiller at an admitted "too good to be true" price.

One look at the workmanship and I opened it up and gave it a good look. I'm honestly worried about plugging it in. All the wiring looks like it's too small to safely carry the loads.

It has no UL sticker, or any other product safety testing label on it either. I did some surfing and have found Chinese manufacturing outfits that will wholesale these things to retailers in the US.

Can anybody tell me if it's legal to even sell appliances like that?

I would like to get my money back, however I would be willing to give this unit to the a consumer safety group if they have the means and connections to initiate a policing action in the in the interest of consumer safety.

I'm suspect I could coerce a refund out of these people, anyway. I already bought a better unit in any case. I'd hate to see anybody wake up in the middle of the night to fight an electrical fire, just because they didn’t know better.

Thanks
