requested a quote from supplier for 17-4, supplier replied with crt-13 as a substitute, can not find any info on this number, is this 17-4 or a like type of stainless

RE: 17-4 stainless

Strider is likely right, or there is another (isn't there always) odd designation for some other 13% Cr grade of stainless. 410 wont hit your strenght (unless the 17-4 was going to be really soft), and the others wont have the corrosion resistance I'd think you want.

I would reply to the supplier that you requested 17-4 and thats what you are going to buy.

Is this a small quantity? McMaster Carr has 17-4 bar I believe.

Other wise time to find some other suppliers.

I love materials science!

RE: 17-4 stainless

I didn't find a relevant reference to crt-13.  Maybe some foreign stuff?  It's not in Woldman's Engineering Alloys (7th edn) or listed by MatWeb as a synonym for 17-4.  Perhaps specify UNS 17400 to minimize confusion or specify Carpenter Technology's Custom 630 for quality assurance.

Also, AMS 5643 & AMS 5622 are within the 17-4 limits & using these as search terms will yield some high quality suppliers:

RE: 17-4 stainless

I suggest to try ask the supplier the chemical composition, if they have any, of this crt 13.
