Copy or Import a Detail View from One Drawing into Another Drawing??

Copy or Import a Detail View from One Drawing into Another Drawing??

(OP)
Good after noon, is there a way to copy or import a detail view from one drawing into another?  It does not need to be linked or anything.  Thank you in advance for any assistance rendered.

RE: Copy or Import a Detail View from One Drawing into Another Drawing??

Select view, ctrl-c (edit/copy), then ctrl-v (edit paste).

A Detail View cannot be copied without its parent view also being copied.

cheers

Thank you for the response, Chris, but it did not work for me.  I had the drawing I want to copy to open and then I opened the drawing I want to copy from.  I then selected the detail view and did a ctrl c to copy it and then I closed that drawing and then I click on the open drawing and did a ctrl v to paste the detail view and I get a message" The item on the clipboard can not be pasted here."  Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?  Thanks you again for the help.

Thank you CorBlimeyLimey for the response.  I was afraid the I could not do something like that, great now all I have is an unside down detail view that I cannot dimension.  Thanks you any way.

RE: Copy or Import a Detail View from One Drawing into Another Drawing??

Since you mentioned that the new detail view doesn't need to be linked to anything.

One very hack way of doing it is to make the original detail view into a bitmap. (Either zoom in and print screen, or save as bitmap)

Then you can just paste the bitmap of the original detail view into your new drawing.

You get the same view without requiring any SW file to support it. Obviously, it doesn't update and you can't change any of the text/dimensions/...

Depending on your needs, this may be sufficient; but will likely upset anyone that may have to work with your drawing in the future.

Thank you Lou for the response, I will give that a try an sense there has been no change on the groove in over 50 years I don't think any one will start now.  thanks again.

In a similar vein to GLED’s suggestion:
  • Save the original drawing as a dxf
  • Use DWG editor to eliminate everything but the detail view and save
  • Use the dxf as a block in your other drawings
The advantage of this method is that it keeps the detail view as a collection of lines rather than a raster image.

You could always copy the parent view and detail view - hide the parent view in the new drawing - right click, hide view, and when the message asks to hide children also, select no.

I like GTCadGuy's suggestion the best.  This is what I would've suggested.
