Vibration testing

(OP)
I want to validate a solenoid for vibration testing. We use 2 types of vibration tests 1. Test at fixed Frequency and apply the g-levels step wise increasing for 20 million cycles.
2. Random vibration Testing for some fixed number of hours.
My question is, Is it better to use 2 different sets of samples for the above mentioned tests? Or, i shall choose a set of samples and perform the both tests sequentially?

RE: Vibration testing

RMS123:  In general I would use two samples.  Having said that, I do not see the need for the fixed frequency test at increasing G levels.  Without having all the information and depending on what you are trying to do the random test would be my first choice. Is this a Qualification Test, or Quality Control Test, or Stress Screen, or some other test?  One of the many disadvantage I see to the single frequency test is that by testing at one frequency you exclude all others.  What is the purpose of this test?  It almost sounds like a destruction test.  What g levels and frequency on the fixed frequency test do you use?  What profile do you do for random

Thanks Dave for your answer. I came to know that few samples were tested earlier at fixed frequency to reproduce a failure some time back. It is a destructive test. Now we are validating the new samples.
