Polypropylene brittle temperture
Polypropylene brittle temperture
(OP)
Can some help me; I would like to know what temperature polypropylene becomes brittle at? I know that some polypropylene can be used for vials and go down to cryogenic temperatures of -190C. Many Thanks.

RE: Polypropylene brittle temperture
Homopolymer around +5 Deg C
Copolymer around -5 Deg C
Impact modified grades down to around -40 Deg C and still retaining sensible impact figures (e.g Sabic PP6614 - Charpy Un-notched @ -40 Deg C is 40 KJ/m^2)There will be plenty of others from other manufacturers.
PP vials at -190 Deg C are no problem as long as you do not drop them - they will be glass-like. PP will not disintegrate just because of the low temp.

One thing you can do is to put the PP vial in a shroud of Basotect (www.basotect.com). Basotect is a melamine foam with the special property that it remains flexible and elastic even at liquid nitrogen temperatures and it's not too expensive.
