Machine Monitoring System 1 (MMS) Rev 5 & Rev 6

Machine Monitoring System 1 (MMS) Rev 5 & Rev 6

Machine Monitoring System 1 (MMS) Rev 5 & Rev 6

(OP)
Hi,

For our recent cogen project (now under commissioning phase), we have installed MMS System 1 Rev 5 for monitoring of the vibration for gas/steam turbine. It was supplied by BN. Also we have the intention to expand the cogen by installing one more gas turbine.

Was informed by the eqpt supplier that they could only supply MMS Rev 6 which is the upgraded version. Unfortunately this coudl not communicate with the old version. To resolve this we need to upgrade the existing system to Rev 6. The time different since we first procure Rev 5 is only 2 years. We just can't believe within 2 years the system is already obsolete!

RE: Machine Monitoring System 1 (MMS) Rev 5 & Rev 6

Not sure if there is a question in there, but yes I do feel your pain. This is computer/software and the technology moves fast in that industry.

I a currently trying to revamp our project specifications such that this sort of kit is not delivered until the end of construction in order to have the lastest and greatest installed for startup.

Coordinating this is easier said than done. Some of the gear you would like to have availble for turbine tests. The solution may be to use factory gear for the tests, skip the FAT's on the Bently gear, and do a site acceptance with up to date kit.

Still trying to work through all that.

RE: Machine Monitoring System 1 (MMS) Rev 5 & Rev 6

Have you thought about entering a: Life Cycle Management agreement with the OEM?
In this type of agreement the risk of equipment and software obsolescence is shared between the supplier and the owner. So, you pay a fee - think of it as an obsolescence insurance policy - and when the hardware or the software becomes obsolete, the OEM MUST UPGRADE all at no extra cost. In Europe they are becoming quite popular due to the short cycle life of electronics and software.

We are in the process of signing an agreement with the OEM. We call it a Long Term Service Agreement (LTSA). But this agreement is mainly to cover the schedule inspection of the gas turbine like boroscope inspection, combustion inspection, hot gas path inspection & major inspection.

I guess as a lesson learned to me is that prior to issuance letter of award to OEM, we need to include a requirement to upgrade the system by the OEM at no extra cost or at an agreed unit rate.

If the LTSA has not been signed yet, that could be part of the negotiation and include the coverage of the BN system1 as part of the agreement.

Once the agreement is signed, it all becomes additional cost.
