Steel Hardening Spec Question

Steel Hardening Spec Question

Steel Hardening Spec Question

(OP)
I'm relatively young and new at this whole "engineering" thing, so I thought I'd throw you elders this hardening question.

I have two hardening processes, "H1025 AMS-H-6875" and "T42 TEMPER MIL-H 6088". I'm trying to determine the time each process takes to complete. I can get the spec sheet for each process from IHS, but they are hilariously long and cryptic (I should be used to that by now). Could somebody elighten me about the details of these processes...mainly how long they take to complete.

Much appreciated!

-Tim

RE: Steel Hardening Spec Question

You need to get familiar with standards like these - much of your time as an engineer will be reading, interpreting, and executing the information contained in standards.

Using the second of your two designations, the reason that document is ~ 70 pages is because materials have greatly different heat treating responses, so you must include a lot of information in the standard.  The solution heat treatment (the first part of the T42 temper) takes between 10 minutes and 24 hours depending on alloy and method (see tables IV and V).  The aging treatment (part two of the T42 temper) takes 96 hours (see table VII).

Good luck.

Cory

Thanks, I had a feeling there was no universal answer. I'll get it done.
