Fugitives monitoring

Fugitives monitoring

Fugitives monitoring

(OP)
Folks,

In our plant, we need to monitor Piping components in VOC as well as HAP services. Leak levels are defined as 10000 ppm for VOC and 500 ppm for HAP. Many components are identified to be both in VOC as well as HAP service. Pls clarify whether these services to be monitored for both VOC as well as HAP? The doubt is cropped up because my little understanding says that if a component can meet 500 ppm HAP, it should be able to meet higher level of 10000 ppm of VOC. Is my understandng correct? Is there any difference in the monitoring approach for these two services within EPA21 itself?

Pls advise.

RE: Fugitives monitoring

VOC's are hydrocarbons heavier than ethane, this means propane, butanes, pentanes, heaxes, heptanes, and on.  HAP's are individually listed chemicals go to this site http://www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/188polls.html to see the list. Generally in Oil & Gas operations, the HAP's are the BETX series (Benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, ans xylene).  Because HAP's are heavier than ethane, they are also VOC's.

So you may measure 10,000 ppm VOC's, but it may only be 200 ppm HAP's.
