Pipe Material Markings

Pipe Material Markings

Pipe Material Markings

(OP)
I was looking at some material markings on pipe and fittings yesterday and noticed that both the ASTM and ASME specs were present.  for example, the flange listed both A-105 and SA-105 (both were stamped into the flange).  is this common practice these days?

thanks
Mark

for these dual marked pipe & fittings, do you just get more/different paperwork when you specify ASME Sec III pipe and fittings?

RE: Pipe Material Markings

ASME/ANSI usually covers the item's fabrication (dimensions, workmenship, mill test pressure and stuff) and leaves a wide range of material possibilities, while ASTM usually covers only the selected material itself.

ASME B16.5 Pipe Flanges and Flange Fittings standard covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, testing,

while ASTM A105B would cover one of the possibile materials that could be used to make the B16.5 flanges.

But you'd be better off specifying SA-105 for a flange on a Section VIII vessel versus an A-105 flange. Saves an argument...

Thus, it is beneficial to have both the ASTM material spec and ASME material spec marked on the component.

I understand where I need to specify either the A material or the SA material.  I was just wondering if I ordered 2 flanges, one A-105 and one SA-105 what would be the difference in the paperwork provided with each. (assuming a dual marked item) I imagine the SA flange would come with more and the cost would reflect the increase in required documentation.

thanks again

I don't think there's any additional documentation required for an SA-105 flange so there shouldn't be any difference in cost. A mill/material test report is not required.

RE: Pipe Material Markings

There would only be different paperwork with some specs.  I don't know the fitting specs, but with tubing some of the ASME specs require different NDT from the ASTM.  Actually the ASTM specs gives you options and the ASME requires a specific test.

In many cases the ASTM and ASME specs are exactly identical, but is some there are important differences.  If you are doing Code work always make sure that you have the ASME.
