FOS overturning check - uneven roof lengths

FOS overturning check - uneven roof lengths

FOS overturning check - uneven roof lengths

(OP)
I have just started in timber house design & havent come across the case below yet, but it has puzzled me a fair bit. Does anyone has some ideas? -

Consider a standard timber frame duopitch house where the rear roof is much longer than the front roof:
Building height to ridge = 8m
Height of front wall = 5m
Height of rear wall = 2m

How is the overturning & restoring moment calculated in this case? This would be for the usual FOS vs overturning calc.

RE: FOS overturning check - uneven roof lengths

drscottuk,

Are you asking this because your roof suction is causing it to sway into the wind?

If so, then I have come across this before, I took the wall loads only and calculated the overturning based on that (if this is worse). Otherwise neglect the wind on the rear cantilever and take that as your overturning.

Thanks csd :) I'll adopt that idea when it crops up, do you know of any guidelines for dealing with very uneven roof lengths? I can't find anything on it in BS6399. Do you know of any other information resource for dealing with unusual wind effects?

RE: FOS overturning check - uneven roof lengths

drscott, have you tried going through the code commentary. If you havent got it I would certainly recommend it to help understand the clauses of the code.

Other than that, I cant help much as it has been a while since I have used a BSI standard.
