sealing oil filled Transformer rads

sealing oil filled Transformer rads

(OP)
Hi all
I am a maintenance with an escalating problem

I am looking for a sealant that can be applied to a transformer cooling radiator as a short term fix.

Our plant outage is not until Autumn

The radiators are a thin sheet mild steel affair with a coating that has failed on the botton edges only.

the problem is made very difficult by the fact that some of the rads are "weeping" a little oil at present.

We had started a program of applying "rust convertor" to the problem areas but in doing so we may have weakened some of the very rusty spots.

I am looking for a quick cure paste on bitumen  type of thing that will seal the problem areas and will not be effected by the oily surface .The sealant would be able to adhere further up on the rad where there is no oil. Not asking for much am I ?. Has anyone any possible solutions please

Regards Pat

RE: sealing oil filled Transformer rads

You might want to checkout these peoples products if the leak isn't very is very small. You might be able to use one type tape in contact with the oil and then another to make a better seal. I would give them a call.

Another approach would be to use a coal tar epoxy. This is just on site that has a lot of information. There are numerous vendors of these materials so a good search is recommended.

There are some caveats in working around transformer oils used in older transformers still in service. A lot of these oils are PCB base and others were not properly cleaned if the PCB's were removed.
