Massive Circuit Breaker Issue

Massive Circuit Breaker Issue

Massive Circuit Breaker Issue

(OP)
I am looking for three 11.5kV, 3500A or greater circuit breakers as specified by a client for a new install power generation plant on a fast track basis.  Can be indoor our outdoor switchgear.  Our research indicates these are rare, but available, however we've been unable to locate one for a short term delivery.  Do these exist?  My experience is that this gear up to 3000A is not too hard to find, but greater than 3000?

RE: Massive Circuit Breaker Issue

These sound like generator circuit breakers which are long lead time items, unless you can locate used or surplus equipment.   Typical vendors are Hitachi, Areva, ABB.  Siemens may have one also.

If your short circuit requirement is low enough, a 15 kV class, forced air cooled circuit breaker may work.  Several companies supply these.  For ANSI applications, PACS Industries and Powell Electric can supply these.  There may be others.

Good luck,

RE: Massive Circuit Breaker Issue

11kV is a standard distribution voltage in the UK. You might have some luck with the UK suppliers, but it's not often we see a breaker bigger than 2500A - 3000A. Economics usually push the voltage up to 33kV or 66kV.

RE: Massive Circuit Breaker Issue

I was just involved in the purchase of two, 15kV class (13.8kv), 10000A circuit breakers for a hydro generating plant.  ABB was the vendor.  I believe the lead time is close to a year.
