High Young modulus-low thermal conductivity materials

High Young modulus-low thermal conductivity materials

Hi,

Do you know materials with high Young modulus and low Thermal conductivity to use at cryogenic temperatures?

I have Titanium 6Al-4V: E = 110 GPa and Thermal Conductivity = 7 W/mK

Thanks

Pesog

RE: High Young modulus-low thermal conductivity materials

is the modulus in tension or compression?
if compression - consider some ceramics such as MACOR.
some other nonmetals such as torlon or ultem, strong materials and low conductivity, modulus not as high as titanium

RE: High Young modulus-low thermal conductivity materials

How about a Ni or Co based superalloy.  The TC will only be slightly lower (~5-6), but the modulus will be over 200GPa.
And a number of these grades are commonly used at cryo temps (625).
You might even look at 316L stainless.

Your best bet is to make sure that the part is in compression and use a ceramic.

I metallic material would be a better option. The Invar option is good, although is a little bit heavy.

I'll check Ni and Co based superalloys properties.

Thank you all!!
