Steel Pipe Encased in Concrete Pier

Steel Pipe Encased in Concrete Pier

Steel Pipe Encased in Concrete Pier

(OP)
This is a typical flag pole type situation.

What is wrong with simply dropping a steel pipe in a hole and encasing it with concrete??  Don't worry about sizing of pipe or pier - that has been worked out.  Structure is not for occupancy - literally a flagpole type application.

I assume that rust is the only real problem and if so - are there simple measures to prevent it.

Thanks for any help.

RE: Steel Pipe Encased in Concrete Pier

Is it a flagpole or something else? If it were a flagpole, there's nothing wrong with the concept per se. You still need to treat it as a drilled pier and would need to provide confinement reinforcement. If you need to replace the flagpole someday, it won't be easy to remove.

Three flag poles in a 60 x 60 x 70 triangle supporting a tent type canopy.

Good point on replacement --- but probably never happen.

RE: Steel Pipe Encased in Concrete Pier

I have done this for a numbe of projects from 3" square to 7 foot diameter, to support signs. As long as there is at least 3" of concrete cover, rust should not be a problem.

You can insert the poles into the wet concrete or pre-insert.

Another optin that cab be used for granular soils, the pole can actually be virated down to the required depth. Needs to be galvanised.
