Compact power supply

Compact power supply

Compact power supply

(OP)
Hi folks.

I'm looking for a very compact, 24V power supply that has a minimum current of 400mA.
A rough idea of the volume would be about 7x7x4 inches.
Is that an unreasonably small size  to expect?

Have you had any experience of good compact power supplies? Or have you any recommendations?

Thanks,

Graeme

RE: Compact power supply

Omron's stuff is usually pretty good. Where are you located? Something I recommend that is available in the UK won't be much use to someone in Argentina!

Also, what input does this power supply have? 120V / 240V / 400V? AC / DC? Something else? What voltage regulation is needed, what output noise can you tolerate, do you need current limiting, etc, etc. The more you give us to work with, the more useful the replies will be.

RE: Compact power supply

That is somewhat HUGE for a 10W supply.

Scotty left out enclosed, corded, open, channel mounted, din mounted, fused, unfused?

Oh god, you've lost me with some of this. Ha ha.

That Omron one is only 80x80x37 mm, which I thought wasn't too bad.

I'm in the UK, it is running from mains voltage (240V), wattage is not important (I don't think), noise etc is definately not an issue. I do not need current limiting.

I'll describe what I have to do, maybe that will help clear things up:

I have a JUMO Logoscreen nt (which is a paperless recorder unit), and I am hooking up 18 pressure transducers to it. The transducers are 4-20 mA, and need between 10-30V to work. So at full load, the supply will have to manage to output (is that correct terminology for current?) 360mA.

I need to connect them all through a power supply (in series) then into the back of the JUMO unit.

I set one transducer up in series with a large power supply and it worked fine, but we are to be fitting the JUMO unit and the PS into a metal casing in the wall, so we want the PS as small as possible.

Don't go too technical on me, I tend to start crying whenever any more than current, voltage and resitance is mentioned. Just as long as the PS can supply the voltage and current, I reckon we should be on to a winner.

Cheers,

Graeme

ps. I just realised I put 7x7x4 inches in my first post. That is quite massive now that I have seen these other two supplies!

RE: Compact power supply

Graeme,

Have a look on the RS Components website. There are literally hundreds of supplies which will meet your requirements.

jraef's recommendation is a good one - the Siemens SITOP supplies are excellent.

Thanks Scotty. I had a look on the RS website. I think that might be the problem for me. Too much to choose from, since I don't really know exactly what to look for.

I think we are going to use jraef's recommendation. It is only £34.00 too, which is quite reasonable I thought.
And it's even narrower than the Omron, which is good.

Cheers everyone.

RE: Compact power supply

I just purchased a 24 vdc, 15 amp unit in that size. Power Supplies are alot smaller nowadays with high frequency switching efficiencies. I was surprised.

TENMA 72-7700, Newark P/N 96H1239 is under $500, 24 VDC, 15 amps continuous rating.
