Anisotropic material with MSC NASTRAN

(OP)
can anyone help?  i'm performing a thermal analysis of a ring with an anisotropic material.  as a test case (to verify BC's and modeling), i apply a unit temperature to a free-free model.  using MAT1 (isotropic) i get stress free expansion.

switching to MAT9 (anisotropic) [i have entered isotrpoic propetties for this test case] and using the ALIGN TO ELEMENT option on PSOLID, i also get stress free expansion.  when i switch the PSOLID to align to a coordinate system, i do not get stress free expansion for the ISOTROPIC MAT9 material

any thoughts?
