A105 and A105N

(OP)
All,

We were in the process of developing some pipe specs when we found numerous references to A105N material for use in forgings.  Yet we couldn't find it on the ASTM website or ASME Codes (ASME IID, B31.3).  There it is called A105.  It probably means the forgings are normalised but what do we specify?  Are all A105 forgings now normalised as a matter of course for process piping applications?  Is there a cut off point or some boundary where it changes?

Cheers,

JOD

specification shall be followed by the letter: A for annealed, N for normalized, NT for normalized and tempered, or QT for quenched and tempered, as appropriate.

RE: A105 and A105N

Please check the ASME SA-105 or ASTM A-105 material specification.  Above a particular pressure rating for flanges (I believe class 300) normalizing is mandatory.

RE: A105 and A105N

All A-105 forgings are not normalized. Normalizing refines grain structure with attendant increase in toughness. Reforging billets can get "lost" in the furnace and grain growth can be excessive. Even with the hot work from forging, I've seen grain sizes of 1 to 2 in annealed and Q&T'd, A-105 forgings and A-181 forgings in the as forged condition.
