Fire Rated Doors and spec plates

Fire Rated Doors and spec plates

Fire Rated Doors and spec plates

(OP)
The hospital I work for was constructed in 1968 and none of the bedroom doors or corridor doors have fire rated name plates indicating burn time. Are plates available for these doors (13/4" solid core)?

RE: Fire Rated Doors and spec plates

Nep,

Check the top of the door, back in the old days they sometimes put the label on the top of the door. If not, u will need to replace the door to receive the rating.

RE: Fire Rated Doors and spec plates

based on the building age - what if the door did not require a fire resistive rating?

I think it didn't. (What a way to conjugate a sentence)

stookeyfpe, I can not conjugate a sentence of that perportion. There is not plate at the top of the doors. During JCAHO, I might be asked to back up the assertation that the doors did not require a fire resistive rating, point me in the right direction. Also, being that the doors are 13/4" would that not make them 20 minute rated?

RE: Fire Rated Doors and spec plates

Their are plenty of methods to calculate fire-resistance using a equivalent thickness method. The NFPA Fire Protection Handbook and the SFPE Handbook of Fire Protection Engineering both have detailed chapters addressing the subject.

Off the top of my head, I would say your doors have at least 20 minutes of fire-resistance based on ASTM E-119 fire test performance requirements. I can't confirm it without performing some calculations and reviewing the previously mentioned references.

RE: Fire Rated Doors and spec plates

some ahj's excepted solid wood unrated door as equal to a 20 minute door

RE: Fire Rated Doors and spec plates

JCAHO... u better have a letter from a PE with the calculations to get them to accept, I think usually does not work with JCAHO
