2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
Just asking about.

We just converted to 2007 Solidworks here at work.  Has anyone noticed it runs abit SLOWER then when using 2006?  Or is it just us here at work?

Thanks

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

2
No difference here.

Have you converted all the files to SW07 format [u]before[/b] opening.

cheers

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
Yes, we ran the convert before opening..

We now see a definate slowness in opening drawings and assembly parts.

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

Are you using SP4?

cheers

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
No, we just upgraded last week, and we are at SP3.1 (Solidworks Professional)

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

SP4 has many fixes, some of which relate to file size and speed of opening.

cheers

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
Talking with a co-worker right now who is having the SAME problems, we are going to talk with our boss and the TI guy and see if we can get the upgrade.  Took awhile just to get the 2007 upgrade (even though the company had the software for abit...

Thanks for your help CorBlimeyLimey

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

designmr,

What are your computer specs just for a point of reference.

What is the slowness you are seeing?  Please be more specific.

Also be sure to get SP 4.0 as CorBlimeyLimey suggests.

SolidWorks 2007 is a bit more demanding of the computer hardware then SW2006.  On older computer systems you may notice it to be a bit slower in some areas.  For the most part though for us we do not notice any real slowdowns with SW2007.

Annawood, my computer here at work is a Dell with:

Intel Xeon 3.72Ghz
2.0 GB Ram
Nvidia Quadro FX 3500

Ripper, no we did not uninstall the past versions...

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

Are you opening the files locally or from the network?

Maybe you are experiencing network slowness and the upgrade was just a coincidence.

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
Josephv, we are all opening file locally...

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

designmr,
A bit slower? A lot slower! I'm really not too happy with SW2007 at all. I wish I was still on SW2006, but was forced to upgrade due to users installing the software on there computers without IT's approval nor internal beta testing. Anyways...I see a poor performance in the drawings and some in large assemblies. I'm test driving SP4.0 right now and seems to be a slight improvement, but not much as SW preaches.

Macduff, we seem to be having even a bit of trouble with our PDM.  I am not a TI guy, so as for installation, I leave that to the TI person.  Though our TI person is NOT familiar with how Solidworks works....

Sorry, I didn't, but from my cubicle, I'm hearing others talking about the problems they are having with PDM.

My main concern right now is the SPEED, or the LACK of SPEED.

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

designmr, you mention that your IT guy is not that familiar with SW, which is not a good thing. They need to be very knowledgeable with the SW software, and how it is installed and operates. There's installation manuals at the SW site that has specific guidelines to follow when upgrading or installing new versions of software. I'm sure that the other SW forum users would agree.

Bottom line, I believe SW 2007 is a lot slower.

Funny, I have been working for TI for about 2 years and I totally read it like IT ;)

More on the subject, I'm still really doubting to go over to SW2007. At the moment I work at a customer 3 days a week in SW2007 and I do my own projects in SW2006. My customers computer hardware is really up a few nodges comparing to my own system but I am really missing the "smoothness" feeling here that I do have on my own system running SW2006.

I have seen a lot of people having slow downs with the Quadro FX 3500 cards. You should make sure your VC driver is correct. If so, then you might want to investigate another driver just to see if it works better.

Remember you have to Uninstall the old driver, Reboot, Install the new driver, Reboot, and test.

Scott, I just updated my driver to the latest version and didn't uninstall the old one first. So what you're saying is...I need to do this for video drivers? Uninstall and re-install? Or are you talking about the SW software?

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

Just a side note about PDM Works. If they have not releised the sp4.1 yet you need to read the notification on sp4 for pdmworks before installing it.

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
I am with Macduff, should the old software version of Solidworks get deleted before re-installing the new version?  If so does it make that much of a difference?  Where would ONE find out why this makes a difference, this company would NOT want us to spend the time unless there was GOOD reason to re-install our 2007.

Rporter, where do you find the info on SP4 for PDM?  Is there problem with PDM on 2007 SP3.1?

Thanks

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

Scott is talking about the video card driver when he says un-install, reboot, install, reboot...  You DO NOT have to un-install SolidWorks on a service pack upgrade.  You should ALWAYS un-install SolidWorks before any Major version installation (for example from 2006 to 2007 version).  Your IT (or TI) department SHOULD NOT have chosen the upgrade option during install when going from 2006 to 2007 version.  If IT has you guys locked down, then at least there should be a liason between engineering and IT - someone that is familiar with both worlds and can instruct/advise IT on how to proceed.

Pete

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

Pete,

Are you sure about ALWAYS installing an older version before installing the next major release?  Is there a downside to having 2 major releases installed concurrently?  If so, this is news to me.  I'm not talking about an upgrade from one major release to the next, I'm talking about 2 parallel installations on the same machine.

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

dgowans,

You can have 2 major version installed on the same machine, but you must be very careful to keep them in separate install folders.  I actually run anywhere from 2-3 major versions (including Betas).  I would recommend for your regular users that they just have 1 version installed - unless you need others for working with other parties that, say, run on a previous version.  You also need to take care that your toolbox data is kept separate from major versions.  All in all, I would recommend just sticking to one major version if you don't need 2 or more.
Here is my outline for updating users here from major versions...

1. Backup Data
2. Turn off AV software
3. Un-install previous version of SolidWorks (including all other programs)
4. Delete the install folders (all of them)
5. Clean the registry
6. Reboot
7. Turn of AV software
8. Install the Newer Major version
9. Apply company standards via a reg file
10. Run CCleaner (clears temp file junk and invalid registry entries)
11. Defrag

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
pdybeck, what happens if you just upgrade, like say we are doing from 2006 to 2007, without uninstalling the old version?  Does it make that much of a difference?

Seems the way your doing it makes it alot cleaner install, but will the newer version run cleaner then not doing it the way you mentioned?

I am not a IT (not TI, as I put before..:) ) person, and am not sure.  So not sure what is the best way, but again, the IT person here doesn't understand Solidworks.

Sbaugh, seems what you saying is my Quadro FX 3500 card, might not be the best for Solidworks.  I am POSITIVE the company will NOT replace are cards though.

Thanks

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

designmr,

If you choose the upgrade from one major to the next without choosing new install and without keeping a new install separate, then you will end up with SolidWorks issues.  If this is your case, then I would recommend following the procedure I listed above.  If you are only running SolidWorks 2007 and did an upgrade from 2006 - then this could be the source of your slowness issues (could be).

Pete

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

I didn't say that the card was not supported... I was just saying that I have seen that card have more trouble with SW07 this year. It was always resolved with a driver most of the time, but sometimes that didn't fix the issue either.

My Uninstall process was for the driver and the driver only. Also that process only works with Nvidia drivers. Those drivers are notorious for conflicting drivers if you don't uninstall the drivers first and ensure that Windows uses the VGA driver when you reboot after you remove the old driver. If you don't get all the drivers removed, then the chances of you getting a conflict in drivers are high. You want be able to tell either, because it will tell you, you are using the latest driver. So when you install new drivers for Nvidia cards follow that process above and make sure that your VGA driver takes over when you reboot.

If you did upgrade your SW06 to SW07 then you are going to probably have problems with your SW. You must uninstall the old version and install the new version. I always change the install directory too just so I don't overwrite anything either.

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

Scott makes a very good point, further to this ensure you disable your anti-virus when installing SolidWorks (or any software). Sometimes the anti-virus prevents critical files from being installed and can cause performance and stability issues later on.

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
Josephv,

A couple of people have mentioned about the "anti-virus" software being disabled on this forum.  I know for sure we didn't do that.

A co-worker mentioned to me, that I forgot, though we have Solidworks local on our computers.  We will be running COSMOS on the server, plus the router add-in.  Being that we will use floating licenses for those two items.

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

I have found out that uninstalling the older versions of SW can help devert future problems  to some degree.

Below are the registries that need to be cleaned out:

These registries should be cleaned out after removal of past versions of SW.

Start\Run > Regedit > OK

Then go remove the following :

HKEY_Current_User\Software\SolidWorks

HKEY_ Local_Machine\Software\Solidworks
HKEY_ Local_Machine\Software\Solidworks Corporation

If some of these settings are not there that's fine as the Uninstall took them away.

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
Well, now I am not sure what is happening here......

I am not sure if it is a SOLIDWORKS issue or HARDWARE now.

Current I am working on a large assembly, approx. 55 MB.  The problem started with, I wanted to open the help file in Solid works.  With this large assembly and its drawing open (another approx. 3 MB), I would get a message something like “NOT ENOUGH MEMORY to CONTINUE, CLOSE UP PROGRAMS FOR MORE MEMORY, HIT RETRY”, (only Outlook was open), well this basically will shut down Solid works.   This seems to happen after a bit of work.

Other times I just can not open this file even after a re-boot.  After another re-boot, I can open it and continue my work.  I will just save after each one or two modifications.

There are other times, I will get the message, “CAN NOT SAVE FILE TYPE”, not sure what this means at all.

I did not have this problem when using SW 2006, only once 2007 was upgraded.  All the files in my folders where converted before I used them.

We had someone else open this file on their computer and try and open the “HELP” file, no problem.

First we did a re-install (FIX) of Solid Works, it didn’t take care of the problem.

This Monday, our IT guy reformatted my hard drive, reinstalled windows and re-installed Solid Works.  It seemed like everything was going well, then after about 1 hour of work, “NOT ENOUGH MEMORY”.  I’ll re-boot the system about a dozen times per day.

The IT person ran the Dell diagnostic this morning on my computer, everything PASSED.

This assembly like I said is pretty big, with 3 configurations in it, is 2007 having problems with “configurations”?  I was thinking of creating a copy of this assembly and taking out my configurations, but adding configurations makes this a more usage assembly at the drawing level.

Can a file be somewhat corrupt and still usable, if so, is there a way to verify a large assemblies integrity?  It took too long to create this assembly I would hate to redo it.

I thought to ask you this, before we just assume it is now the hardware.  Would hate to replace the computer and then still get this messages.

It’s very noticeable to me, as the day progresses that my computer is slowing down.  Revolving this assembly and saving as the minutes go by take longer and longer.

THANKS..

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

Open your task manager and find out how much RAM is being used when you have these files open.  Seems like you are running out of RAM (memory).  If thats the case, then enabling the 3GB switch in the windows boot file will allow you to access more memory - more then what Windows is allowing SolidWorks to get to.  This may be what you are seeing, and just adding more RAM would not necessarily fix it, unless its coupled with the 3GB switch being enabled.  You may want to jump up to 3GB and enable the switch, depending on what you find with the task manager.

Pete

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

You don't need to jump to 3GB of physical RAM before enabling the /3GB switch. I've experienced improvements with only 512MB installed.

cheers

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

We have 2GB of RAM on our computers and have the 3GB switch enabled.  We were operating without it and SolidWorks was crashing when we hit about 1.3GB of memory useage - far below the 2GB that was installed.  Windows was reserving too much space for itself and not letting applications use as much as what is available.

Pete

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
Ok, we tried opening this assembly with the Task manager opening.  With Solidwork open and no files, we sat at about 521 MB....then as the assembly was opening it was climbing 880MB, 1.10GB, 1.4GB....1.56GB...1.85GB..the avaiable went to zero twice, then "insufficent memory".

We did try it on another persons EXACT same computer, and it NEVER got pass 1.55GB, his available never hit zero.

So, the IT guy is going to bump me to 4GB of memory....

So, it looks like yes it is a large file, but my memory is not good.  Heck the machine is only a couple month old..

stay tuned.

But does having CONFIGURATIONS in a large assembly cause a file to be larger?

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

designmr ... before installing the extra RAM, activate the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file, and then monitor the Task Manager. I guarantee you will see an improvement ... not in speed, just in the ability to use more RAM. You should see the 1.55GB go to about 2.5GB.

The boot.ini file is located in the root folder and will look something like;

CODE

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /3GB
All you need do is add the /3GB as shown.

cheers

Quote (designmr):

Does that mean the assembly was out on your network? If so, it could be a bottleneck between your machine and the server. If so, more RAM may not help.

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

Quote:

But does having CONFIGURATIONS in a large assembly cause a file to be larger?
Yes. It may not be a linear increase (ie. 2 configs = 2x the file size), but it will most definitely increase.

cheers

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

the boot.ini file is found on the root of C:.  In windows you must turn off the view setting to hide protected operating system files.  Once you do that, you can see the boot.ini file.  It will be read-only at first, so you have to right click on the file and change the readonly state under properties.  Also, you will want to copy the line in the boot.ini file and mess around with that copied line to add your 3GB switch statement.  Do this so incase you screw up the syntax, you can still boot into windows.  After you edit, reboot windows and then select the OS instance to boot into - this will be the second one if the second line in the boot.ini file contains the 3GB switch argument...

Pete

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
Thanks all....the IT guy, order 4GB for my computer, so I should have it in tomorrow...

I was able to open the file, delete the configurations.  The task manager showed is was still up to 1.44GB....not a huge difference, considering how much work it would take to create separate modeels.....(by the way, I copied the original, too much work in this assembly.)

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

That's good news that you will be getting 4GB RAM. However, just installing 4GB RAM will not allow SW to get past the 2GB limit. It will help you reach the limit faster though. smile

You will still need to enable the /3GB switch to allow SW (or any other application) to access 3GB.

cheers

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
Well so far, 4GB was added, BLAM, SW still blew up.  Dell is coming to add a new Motherboard, I mentioned to the IT guy about adding the /3GB switch, guess that might not happen yet...so we will see...

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

Like I said, "just installing 4GB RAM will not allow SW to get past the 2GB limit".

From the information you have provided, the motherboard is not the problem. You have reached the memory limit of Windows file processing capability. If you are not having any other mobo related problems, the only things which will help are;

1) Make the files smaller.
2) Switch to a 64 bit OS and computer with more RAM.
3) Use the /3GB switch to increase the 32 bit OS memory limit.

Items 1 and 2 will consume time and $$$$, item 3 costs nothing and can be done in 30 seconds plus a reboot. Tough choice, eh? smile

cheers

RE: 2007 Solidworks is SLOW?

(OP)
The /3GB sounds the easiest.  Myself, I don't mess with program changes that effect the computer...All I need is to mess something up and NOT be able to re-boot my computer.  This is why I passed the info to our IT person, but....

Not sure the Dell guy will know anything about this switch, but I will ask when he come today.

Thanks again CorBlimey

DARN, I then put the NEW motherboard, now with 4GB. I figure if the IT guy will not make the change to the boot.ini, I will (though QUITE abit nervous to do that).

But reading JMirisola......should I still mess with it.

Though, if I change it, I can always delete it also

Jeff ... try adding the /3GB and /userva=2900 switches.

I wonder if the Core Duo CPUs need the little extra RAM allocation than the lone /3GB switch offers?
