Hyperion plans first U.S. refinery since 1976
Little-known, privately held company is looking at locations in Midwest

HOUSTON - Little-known, privately held Hyperion Resources Inc. said on Wednesday it plans to build an $8 billion oil refinery, the first in the United States since 1976, at one of several sites under consideration in the U.S. Midwest.

RE: New US Refinery - Since 1976?

There is a reason for no new refinery's in the US in over 30 years--at the end of the day you just can't get permits.  It is just about as hard to permit a refinery as to permit a Nuclear Power Plant (and I don't think there have been any new permits for nuc plants in the same period).

There is a lot of NIMBY.  There is a lot of tree huggers stopping nasty oil just for the sake of stopping nasty oil.  EPA is simply a pain.  Fish & Wildlife bemoan the loss of habitat.  etc.

I hope Hyperion has the wearewithal to pull it off, but look for a page 10 story about either their bankrupcy or their cancellation of their planned refinery.

Hi Big Inch,

I would love to have it here in Canada.

Just curious, why wouldn't you want it in the US? I am assuming you are US based?

Ya. I know you're in Canada, so I just thought I'd suggest that it goes in your back yard.  Actually I'm not bothered too much by wherever it goes.  I did my time living next to refineries back in Houston for 35 years.  Now I'm in Spain.

But really, why not refine it in Canada and sell it to the U.S. with value added as refined products?  All the Mideast countries are wanting to do that now.

I would love for the next North Americal refinery to be in Canada - we keep the profit margins.

You are in Spain? Didn't realise that there was a large petroleum industry there. Wine and cork - yes. Petro - not so much.

We got pleanty of oil, but its VERY expensive.  About $630/BBL .... olive oil.

This location is "strategic", if you see it as the geographic center of all the world's oil fields.  I have a couple of petro clients, but not here.
