USA steel equivalent

USA steel equivalent

(OP)
We have a contract with a UK aerospace company, calling out S82 steel. Does anyone know of a readily available USA equivalent.

RE: USA steel equivalent

Similar (but not equivalent) steels include:

ASTM A 543 Grade B and Grade C

SAE AMS 6264

HY-100 and HY-80

Regards,

Cory

RE: USA steel equivalent

There is no US equivalent to S82 (16NCD17, etc.).  SAE AMS 6264 is close, but has less Ni & Mo.  Corus in the UK is the only steel mill that I know which produces these high-Ni, aerospace-quality carburizing grades.  You may try their US office in Chicago:

RE: USA steel equivalent

ESDU MMDH lists the following Euro, French and German equivalents, just in case they're more readily available:

FE-PL2110
AIR9160 16 NCD 17
1.6723

In addition S156 and German spec 1.6722 seem to be a VAR version of almost the same material (a fraction less Si and tighter control of harmful impurities, see below), which may also be included in the above Euro and French specs.

Also just in case, S82 is aka prEN2767 (bar) and prEN2768 (forging).

There are no US specs listed and it doesn't have a common name.

S82 has the following composition:
Element Min % Max %
C 0.14 0.18
Si 0.15 0.4
Mn 0.25 0.55
Cr 1 1.4
Mo 0.2 0.3
Ni 3.8 4.3
P — 0.025
S — 0.020

S156 has the following composition:
Element Min % Max %
C 0.14 0.18
Si 0.1 0.35
Mn 0.25 0.55
Cr 1 1.4
Mo 0.2 0.3
Ni 3.8 4.3
P — 0.015
S — 0.012

However, I reckon TVP has the right of it in terms of a way forward for you.
