Properties of Aluminium

(OP)
Hi all,
I have to design an instrument for use at 60K. However, I do not know what happens (if anything) to the mechanical properties of materials at these temperatures. Does anyone have a link where I can find this out? I specifically need to know what happens to the yield strength of Al. 6061 at 60K.

thanks for any help
Paul

RE: Properties of Aluminium

Hi pdjolly,
Yield strength of the T6 temper increases about 10,000 psi at 60K.  Tensile strength also increases almost 20,000 psi.

If you want a graph, check in "Cryogenic Materials Data Handbook (Revised)" Fred R Schwartzber et al.  July 1970.

Hi iainuts,
thanks for the information.

cheers

RE: Properties of Aluminium

Mil handbook 5F has a plot of yield strength of 6061-t6 vs temperature. at -200 F it increases from room by 8%, by 14% at -300  and 30% at -400 F.
