How to Create Plate Girders in Risa 3D?

How to Create Plate Girders in Risa 3D?

(OP)
I use Risa 3D Version 5.0.  I am trying to create a plate girder and I keep getting the following message:

"Web is slender per Table B5.1, handle as a plate girder"

Can anyone please help.

Thanks

RE: How to Create Plate Girders in Risa 3D?

I would say your best bet would be to send RISA an email to their tech help group - they respond pretty well.

RE: How to Create Plate Girders in Risa 3D?

We are running 6.0 and I think a new release is on its way. Maybe an upgrade is in order.

Are you familiar with plate girder design? They often require stiffeners where typical WF members don't. I don't know for sure if you can get RISA3D to design stiffeners for you or if all you get is a warning to alert you to the slender web. You may need to design the stiffeners yourself - not a tough task.

RE: How to Create Plate Girders in Risa 3D?

What it's telling you is that they've only programmed in the capability of doing bending strength or allowable stress calcs for nonslender web sections.  You'll have to get the moments and shears from RISA and do the strength calcs by hand.  The other option is to make your web thicker so that it's nonslender.

RE: How to Create Plate Girders in Risa 3D?

Just found in the RISA help file en route to looking up something else:

Wide Flange Shapes - Code checks for shapes that qualify as plate girders, as defined by Chapter G, are not performed.  Plate girders that can be checked by the provisions of Chapter F will have code checks calculated.
