Max Hardness of SS Vessel

Max Hardness of SS Vessel

Max Hardness of SS Vessel

(OP)
We have been told by a customer that we need to keep the hardness of welds in a 304 SS vessel below 200 BHN. Is there any reason to do this for a steam autoclave application?
Thank you

RE: Max Hardness of SS Vessel

They may be concerned with excessive cold work during plate rolling and head forming and potential for stress corrosion cracking.

RE: Max Hardness of SS Vessel

Agree with stanweld for the actual base plate + weld hardness requirements after fabrication. Not sure why the welds would be specifically singled out for hardness w/o mentioning the plate material.

RE: Max Hardness of SS Vessel

I believe that I may have found the reason for the hardness specification. In my AVESTA WELDING MANUAL, for each electrode (covered or bare), there is a comprehensive list of mechanical properties and hardness is also listed. For E/ER 308L, AVESTA lists 200 Brinell for as-deposited hardness.
