I suspect many of us here grew up on Popular Science magazines, "back in the day".  This column, Gus's Garage, was something that taught me a lot abot diagnosis in particular, and common sense too.  Today's magazines are filled with crap that promotes some product or another, no real knowledge. I feel sorry for today's youth...

This site has the original columns going back into the '20's, including a reader survey on what kind of car to buy for under $2,000.  Among the contenders:  Essex, Nash, Chevrolet, Ford, and a used Cadillac.  Interesting reading, especially the service-it-yourself features of the Nash!

I especially enjoyed the "Mechanics Creed".

Good link.

Interesting, I always felt sorry for older people because they never had anything cool to buy.

Great site!

Haven't you ever seen anything really cool in an antiques shop.

RE: Have to share this link...

Absolutely! I stop in everyone I see.  Always on the lookout for a good pinball machine.

You just never saw the silver ball pitched in a science magazine despite it being a wonderful collaboration between engineeering and art.  Some are right up there with the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost :)

One the home page is Gus measuring a gasket with a micrometer?  MIGHTY particular fella
