C1023 Filler Wire

C1023 Filler Wire

C1023 Filler Wire

(OP)
Hi everyone,

Does anybody know which is a better filler wire for welding C1023, a 80/20 Ni/Cr or a Ni based 5% Cr with regards to minising cracking?

Thanks

RE: C1023 Filler Wire

What do you mean by C1023? C10230? Can you provide a chemical composition?

C1023 alloy (Ni – 15.5% Cr – 9.7% Co – 8.3 % Mo – 4.1 % Al)

In the past, we have always been using the 80/20 Ni/Cr (AMS 5676) filler wire for welding C1023 (MSRR 7046), but the results have not been very satisfactory, cracking always seems to be a big issue. After reviewing the revelent documents, I found out that the OEM allows AMS 5786 as a alternative to AMS 5676, no reasons were given and I was wondering if using AMS 5676 reduces cracking. So can anybody help me out.

RE: C1023 Filler Wire

Ok, this is a superalloy material that cross references with IN 713LC. Going off of memory, the IN 713 LC is not readily weldable. The constituents in this superalloy tend to migrate to grain boundaries from the heat of welding resulting in intergranular fissures.

I don't recall if a filler metal was really developed for this material because the cracking occurs along the weld fusion zone and is not a consequence of the filler metal.

I would try the suggested filler metal on an actual coupon and see if it reduces the fissures in the In 713 LC base metal.
