Heat treatment reference book

Heat treatment reference book

Heat treatment reference book

(OP)
Is there a heat treat reference book that deals with both the theoretical aspects and practical approach to heat treatment?  I'm actually looking for a reference book that is a combo of ASM hand book (Heat treatment Vol-4) and ASM -Heat treaters guide?

Appreciate any help.

RE: Heat treatment reference book

What alloys are you primarily working with? Most of the in-depth reference books that cover both the theoretical and practical aspects of heat treatment usually focus on a specific range of alloy compositions. As a starting point look at FAQ330-837: How do I heat treat high speed and tool steel alloys?.

Thanks Maui. Appreciate the response.  Found the FAQ informative.

I work mostly with SA105, A694, SA182, SA304 and 316 grade forgings, 4130, 4340, H13 and H21 steels for tooling and occasional Inconel and Aluminum alloys.

I'd like to buy a desk-top reference book that deals with both the theoretical approach and the practices in heat treatment, without having to buy both ASM Vol-4 and ASM Heat Treater's guide. I do not deal with heat treatment on a day to day basis but get a lot of heat treatment work done from vendors.  I'm faced with situations where our materials do not achieve the required mechanical properties. I'm sometimes at a loss to understand the process. I wish to educate myself about the approach and practices in the Heat treatment industry.

Hi! All,

I have a question regarding P.C.E.
I've heard of C.E. - Carbon Equivalence,
but what is P.C.E??  Any help??

RE: Heat treatment reference book

For tool steels, you may want purchase this one:

"Heat treatment, Selection and application of Tool Steels" by Bill Bryson (Hanser Gardner Publications).

Hope this helps.
