any requirements for plastic covers on H2SO4 flanges?

any requirements for plastic covers on H2SO4 flanges?

(OP)
we are replacing some sulphuric acid piping and some areas use plastic flange covers and others do not.

i prefer to install correctly (proper torque, alignment, etc.) and not have spray protection covers.  i have also seen these hold up rainwater or small drips and fail bolting and then you have a real mess.

for flexibility purposes that include flushing, etc. this piping will be PTFE lined carbon steel piping.

also, are there any specific references to B31.3 or acid suppliers you might be able to cite rather than anecdotal evidence?

thanks!

RE: any requirements for plastic covers on H2SO4 flanges?

Ben

I would be surprise if CODE covers flange protective covers since they do not add nor distract from the quality of the piping material for the intended service.

Covers are usually company/plant preferences.  However, common sense would dictate that they be utilized along walkways, operator stations, when overhead personnel space, or any other area where there is possibility of contact with personnnel.  Personnel safety is paramount.

Most other area of pipe routing will probably be over drip trays, containment of some manner, and areas of non personnel access.
