BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

(OP)
On sheet one I rearrange the BOM order (move items up/down).
How can I get the same BOM order on sheet 2?

I can get the item bubbles on sheet 2 to match BOM on sheet 1, but the BOM itself is not rearranged like the BOM on sheet 1.

To get bubbles to match on page 2:
On sheet 2, Rt click a view / Properties / Checkbox: Keep Linked to Properties / Dropdown box select: BOM1

Thank you,
Dee Anderson

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

Do you have multiple CONFIGURATIONS of your assembly?

Also... I only have my BOM on one sheet anyway... it's much simpler... IMHO.

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

The best way to keep the same order is to have the parts in the assy arranged the way you want them to appear in the BOM and then use the Follow assembly order option.

cheers

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

I do not have configurations of the assy, but might in the future.

BOM on 1 page eliminates the issue, but we have dwgs with 17 sheets and want to have the applicable BOM items show on each sheet. We don't want to give that up if SW has a way to keep it organized.

It is not practical for us to use the "Follow Assy Order" option because we group items by thickness but can't build the assy that way.  Again we don't want to change our planning/purchasing/mfg practices if SW can keep it organized.

If SW can keep item bubbles linked why not the BOM?

Thank you everyone,
Dee

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

I think, then, that your only option is to "recreate" the second BOM the same way you did the first.

I could cobble a work-around for you... but (trust me) the cure would be worse than the disease.

Thank you Tate that's what we've been doing but of coarse it is not a smooth process.

I wonder if this has already been requested as an enhancement.  I'll check and post the reply.

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

Whether it's been requested or not is immaterial. If you haven't already done so, add your own ER. The more ERs SW receives for a specific feature, the higher priority it gets ... but not multiple ERs from the same person.

cheers

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

(OP)
The ER isn't working on the SW website whether I sign in with username or with active maint#, so I sent it to my var and asked them to submit.

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

Maybe I don't understand the issue here.  Are you saying that you have the same BOM items on sheet 1 as you do on sheet 2 and you want them to read in the same order? Why in the world would you want the same information on both sheets?

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

(OP)
we have dwgs with 17 sheets and want to have the applicable BOM items for each sheet show on that sheet, and with item numbers that jive.

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

I am using SW 2006 5.1 and apparently you have to manually change the BOM row order on each sheet independently.  But like you said in your first post, you can at least link the balloons to the seperate sheet boms.  That was a trick I didn't know about.

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

I hate to keep writing this, but here goes.
If each sheet is a separate assy, it should have its own separate dwg and its own assy number. I know a lot of companies don't follow configuration management, but if they had, stuff like this would be much easier.
So, since you already have a system in place to add your assy's on one dwg, separate shts, my suggestion is to use an Excel BOM. It may be easier.
Just my 2 cents. cheers

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

Stugots - glad it helped, it would link the VIEW on sheet2 to a bom on sheet1.

Chris - thanks for your thoughts.  we have 1 dwg with 17 pages.  It is 1 assy that requires lots of views (lots of pages).  Although some sheets are sub assys, most sheets are different portions of the same assy.  Sheet 1 is the complete unit.  Sheets 2-17 show the assembly process.

Would an XL bom to make what we're after more seamless?

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

soapbox
In terms of drawing practice, it is best to only have a single BOM.

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

Each subassy should have its own dwg, then each assy should its own dwg. To have the whole assy process on one dwg can be confusing for assemblers, planners, config control, QA, etc. How do you stock these assy's and subassy's?
I agree with TheTick, one BOM per dwg. I have always had the best luck with a separate BOM using either Excel or Access. The planners and purchasing can use the data on the BOM to order parts without the need of a dwg in front of them. Plus they think they can send dwgs to whomever they think, which they shouldn't.

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

I wrote a macro some time ago to sort and synchronize different BOMs on different sheets to the master BOM on the first sheet. It doesn't actually link them together, it just matches up the item numbers.  If you have any coding experience I can post it here for you.  It will likely require some tweaking to work for your situation, though.

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

(OP)
Appreciate ya'lls time.  For ref: We make custom engineered dampers and expansion joints for piping/ducting systems.

Single BOM: I agree, this is what I'll propose

Separate BOM: Will consider send that to purchasing

Separate sub-assy dwgs:  we will consider however... We use the dwg like insstructions for assembling a bbq pit, and it's helpful to have it all as 1 document, so people can look to the next step or to the final assy to see what's coming.

Stocking:  We don't stock any of the assys or sub-assys.

Macro:  Thank you maybe later I'll let  you know, we want to stay with standard SW if at all possible.

Comments all helpful, a good sanity check!  Anything else postit.  Thanks, Dee

RE: BOM order on sheet 2 to match rearranged BOM on sheet 1

I'd like to tack this question onto this forum becuase it is pertinent.  So, how in SW 2006 5.1 do you have a BOM on the first sheet and the drawing view on sheet 2?  Only way I can seem to do it is to create the view, create the bom, then delete the view and add it onto the second sheet. Has to be a simpler way. Isn't there?
