Under ASME SEC IX, GTAW automatic welding process(Autogenous)How would you qualifie the welder? Is it a machine qual or a operator qualification. QW 256 list filler
material requirements, if you are using autogenous method how would you determine qulification requirements. How many
and what size coupons would you be required to use. If it is a machine qual could the welder do a 1/4" tube coupon .035" and be good for all sizes since you are basically qualifing the machine and not the operator?

RE: orbital welding

uboat;
Under ASME Section IX you qualify the welder using the automatic GTAW process, using Form QW-484A Welding Operator.

It sounds to me that you do not understand the requirements under ASME Section IX.

What you need to do is to qualify a welding procedure specification (WPS) using the automatic GTAW process with no filler metal. Read ASME Section IX, Article II, QW-256. You can qualify using all of the listed essential welding variables, w/o filler metal (QW-404.14).

Next, review Article IV, welding data for coupon sizes and resulting base metal ranges.

While in the process of qualifying this welding procedure, the welder can qualify, as well.
