Importing of an IGES file

Importing of an IGES file

Importing of an IGES file

(OP)
Seam to run into problems when trying to import iges files (SW2005) I run through the process and all I get at the end is the assemble tree all the file structure is there (in each part there is no features). I have played with all the different setting to no avail. I asked a friend who runs SW2003 and I open the file fine on with his, I copied all the setting but still no go.

Any ideas

Thanks

RE: Importing of an IGES file

Are you saying that when you import an IGES file all you get is a solid body with no features?  If so, generally when you import a file (.igs, .stp, etc) you end up with a "dumb" solid with no features in the feature manager tree.  Depending on what version and package of SW you have, after importing you can run the solid body through the Feature Works add-in.  This add-in will recognize and map the features needed to build the part and then populate the feature manager tree.

Hope that helps.

I understand I should just have a 'dumb' solid which is what I would expect but I have no feature at all.

RE: Importing of an IGES file

Can you open the individual parts? If so, what is shown in them?

cheers

nothing, just the same stuff as when you open a new part.

RE: Importing of an IGES file

Are you saying that you can't see anything on the screen...just an empty part document?

Yes an empty assembly with empty parts

RE: Importing of an IGES file

Does this happen with all IGES files or just assemblies?  It may be an issue with the document supplier.

I don’t get many sent to me, the one I have is form a major engine supplier and NDA's and confidentially agreements would not allow me to share it.

Just odd how it opens correctly with a friends SW2003

I run SW2005 SP5.0

RE: Importing of an IGES file

Have you gone into IGES import options and made sure you have the box to import solids and surfaces checked?

Back from a well needed vacation....

RE: Importing of an IGES file

Yes that's the first thing I did changed all the settings about but with no joy.

I matched my settings to my friends as his worked correctly but again no joy.

RE: Importing of an IGES file

Try opening each individual part in that assembly.  Make sure all of the features (if there are any) are resolved, save the parts and rebuild the assembly.  Sometimes the supplier will suppress the features of the parts to keep file size and loading time down.

This works fine with my mates SW2003!

A pian getting him open and save as SW parts every time

RE: Importing of an IGES file

Interesting. There should be a solid bodies folder under the design binder on the PLCC part. I opened this up in a seat of SW05 SP5.0 I have on my machine, and I had no problems. I hate this suggestion, but it you may want to try a repair or reinstall...

Thanks for your help! much appreciate this support site.

I get the same thing that you are getting with the file that rfus had.

RE: Importing of an IGES file

rporter ... which version of SW?

cheers

RE: Importing of an IGES file

By the way I'm using 2006 sp5.1

RE: Importing of an IGES file

That's strange. I have SW06-SP5.1 also and it imports fine.

How are you opening the zip file?

It probably won't change anything, but try dragging and dropping the zip file directly onto the SW empty graphics or empty toolbar area.

cheers

RE: Importing of an IGES file

I think CBL's onto something with the zip question. It sounds like these IGES files are getting corrupted on james78 and rporters machines.

james78, Were the other files you recieved from your vendor in a zip folder? What did your mate use to unpack the zip file? What did you use. There was something there because all the origins came in in the pic you showed.

rporter, did you use winzip to decompress the file I pointed you towards?

Try using winRAR to extract that file and see if the results are the same. http://www.rarlab.com/

RE: Importing of an IGES file

I tried both metheds and neather worked. Good thing I dont have to open IGES files.

RE: Importing of an IGES file

One more thought. If you save a SW part on your machine as an iges file with SW and then re-open it do you get the same results?
