Is it Rotary Broaching or Wobble Broaching?
Is it Rotary Broaching or Wobble Broaching?
(OP)
Our rotary broaching tools which make square and hexagon holes on a CNC or screw machine are commonly called by two different names. The CNC guys call it rotary broaching, and the screw machine guys call it a wobble broaching. There are advantages and disadvantages to both names. "Rotary" best describes the generic feature of the operation, which can be done on any CNC, milling, drilling, lathe or screw machine. It uses something that rotates. This is the name we use most often. "Wobble" best describes what you see when the tool is on a milling machine and appears to be wobbling around, and is a great memory helper. Do we continue to refer to it by two different names, or settle on one? Should we push for an industry standard somewhere, or live with status quo? your thoughts please...

That's odd, because you wouldn't perceive the tool as wobbling in a screw machine or a lathe, but you would in a mill.
I think "wobble" is more descriptive of how the tool works, whereas "rotary" could be confused with something like polygon turning. Actually, the motion is better described as "orbital" or "precessional", but you'd never get a machinist to use words like that.

It's true that the names seem reversed for the machines they are using. I think this is because of older machines and drill presses where the tool was originally used as a secondary operation before it was common to use it within the primary machine.

The term wobble broaching conjures visions of a bell mouthed hole.
