Pnuematic Instrumentation

Pnuematic Instrumentation

I am looking for any good information on pneumatic instrument control systems.  I am working on an offshore oil and gas application and all of the instruments are pnuematic.  This is an older platform.  I am not very familiar with pnuematic instruments and just looking for any free pdfs or anything that would assist in knowing more about these type of instruments.  Thanks!

You will probably also run into the Amot 4057 (also an Emerson product).

Sorry for the double post.  Thanks for the info.

Wow, Pneumatic instrumentation.  That brings back memories.  Whose is it, or is it a mix/match bunch of stuff.

rmw,

Yes pneumatic instruments!  The project I am working on is a compliance upgrade on a platform that was built in the mid-70's.  I am new to the instrumentation side much less pneumatic instruments.  The existing instruments on this platform are pneumatic.  Instruments will be replaced or added as needed.  Not many people I talk to have much if any experience with a total pneumatically controlled system.

Does anyone have any documentation, such as some sort of pneumatic instrument control philosophy even though it may not exactly apply to what I am doing, to use as a go-by due to my lack of experience with pneumatic control and instrumentation in general. I would greatly appreciate that!!

I appreciate the responses to links of pneumatic instruments, but I am looking for an overall tutorial, so to speak, on pneumatic control and example applications.  If anyone has information on that, please post a link.  Thanks for your response.

RE: Pnuematic Instrumentation

Pneumatic controls started to be replaced by electronic ones, starting back in the mid-70 (at my plant anyways). I would be surprised if there were web sites with pneumatic control examples and applications.

Pneumatic controls is not much different than electonic controls. Instead of 4-20 mA, they use 5-30 psi. A level controller is a level controller - sensing element, logic element, final element. Instead of a PLC, you have pneumatic controller. The application is the same.

I think you should probably study up (as you say, you are new to controls) on "control theory and implementation", rather than "pneumatic control theory and implementation" - I think it will serve you better in the end.

RE: Pnuematic Instrumentation

Pneumatic instrumentation includes computing elements for adding, multiplying, square root extraction, etc.  However the scaling issues are much easier when done by computer controls as compared to pneumatic controls.
