Vent Pipe

Vent Pipe

Vent Pipe

(OP)
Hi

I have a vent pipe that is suppossed to extract air and dust from a salt and brine tank, however, it continuosly gets clogged causing the salt dust to come out of the safety release feature and fill up the entire room with salt dust. How can I correct this.

RE: Vent Pipe

Without full knowledge of your physical duct routing and installation configuration I would suspect that the velocity of the exhaust duct is NOT sufficient

RE: Vent Pipe

(OP)
We are haveing problems with the salt dust corroding the floor, walls, and other items in the room. When the truck is unloading the salt the vent pipe is just unable to to pull the dust out sufficiently because it gets clogged quickly. Presently, we are having to clean the vent pipe once a week and yet we still have not managed to fix this problem.

RE: Vent Pipe

Cleaning the vent pipe once a week will not correct the problem.  Cleaning the vent is a maintenence issue.
Apparently, you have a design problem on your hands.

Several possible suggestions of the root of problem:
1. Velocity NOT sufficient
2. Undersized fan capacity
3. Undersized Hp rating
4. Incorrect Duct size(s)
5. Incorrect duct routing / installation / design.
6. etc

The fellow readers will probably add many more items to consider.

RE: Vent Pipe

Is it clogged with dry dust, or is it wet?

RE: Vent Pipe

(OP)
The dust is wet

RE: Vent Pipe

(OP)
There is water being released along with the salt dust causing crystallization around the room.

RE: Vent Pipe

It sounds like the vent needs to be larger, with some sort of internal baffle to prevent water/mist carryover.

If internal revisions are not possible, installing a rod-out tee right at the tank would help.  Probably with a knock-out pot also to keep the rest of the vent pipe dry.

I am guessing that the dust could just as well settle back into the brine in your application, and that the main function of this vent is to remove the air used for blowing salt into the tank.

RE: Vent Pipe

Wouldn't the internal baffle be detrimental to exhausting the salt dust??

RE: Vent Pipe

I think the velocity is too high and the vent is too small.  Too much dust and moisture is being pulled in.  A larger vent and lower velocity would pull less dust and moisture, yet allow sufficient air venting.  Keep the dust in the tank and let it settle into the brine.

Or add more vents.
