Locking Differentials vs continuous auto torque biasing

Locking Differentials vs continuous auto torque biasing

Locking Differentials vs continuous auto torque biasing

Reference thread78-65869

I am experiencing inside rear wheel spin during hard cornering on a 1970 English Ford Escort in vintage racing.
I used to race a Lotus Cortina which used a plate type Salisbury limited slip, and it served quite well. The current Escort has a Quaife automatic torque biasing limited slip, which becomes totally ineffective if the inside rear is not in contact with the ground. I'd like to contact Rod "EVELROD" regarding his 4.44 LoCort diff on the shelf. Don, (817) 925-3904.

RE: Locking Differentials vs continuous auto torque biasing

Sorry Don.  The 4.44 Detroit locker is going in the car as soon as I get it finished.  My son finally got it painted and I started on the electrical this afternoon.  When it was raced back in the day, I used a 3.9 or the 4.12 diffs with 20 or 21 inch slicks...the vintage rules won't allow slicks so I'm going to use 215-50-13's on 6" rims (slicks used 7").  The radial tires are something like 23" dia. and the 3.9's give 17.532 mph/1000rpm---the 4/12's are 16.596mph and the 4.44's are 15.4mph.  With the 4.44's I'll end up with a top speed of 123mph @ 8000rpm and that's about all I could expect from a 165 hp vintage Lotus Cortina.  Sorry. (I do have a s*** load of 13 x 7 American Libre's in the Ford pattern.)

Oh yes, I rather like the Detroit Locker, but I am, as usual, a majority of one! I use a Tran-X clutch type on my Mini and it seems ok, at least at 110 wheel hp.

Rod,

Thanks for the response.  Sorry to hear the 4.44:1 DL won't be available, but glad to hear a Lotus Cortina rising to the fight again.  Please Google or Yahoo "ex-factory Lotus Cortina" to see my prior racer.  I'm active in CVAR, from Arlington, TX.  With over 200 hp available from my Escort's Cosworth BDA, I've got to get wheelspin under control better.  Regards, Don.

RE: Locking Differentials vs continuous auto torque biasing

I thought that I had heard something about a revised Quaife or Thorsen diff that was supposed to help with your situation. I don't remember what was changed, but it might be some type of preload arrangement. ISZ

RE: Locking Differentials vs continuous auto torque biasing

Don, I was scheduled for the CVAR race at Ft. Worth a couple weeks ago but had to cancel due to a blown tire taking out a bunch of expensive stuff in my motorhome.  Tom Davies, a blue Mini racer with a white top, #9, from Ft. Worth (runs a vintage Mini race site) has invited me to another race, perhaps TWS.  With fuel prices at an all time high, I may not make it.

With any luck we should have the Locor race ready again by Summers end.  Then the fun begins. (I raced it at TWS in 1972 and it might be fun to bring it back there again.)

Rod,

I know Tom Davies well, he was at the CVAR races at MotorSport Ranch at Cresson, TX this last weekend, as was I.  It was the first outing of my 1970 Ford Escort RS1600 B Sedan.  I'd really like to discuss with you, please call my cell sometime at your convenience.

Regards,

Don

RE: Locking Differentials vs continuous auto torque biasing

I´m not sure about the posting policies on this page, but I´d like to help anyway. I work in the fields of Limited Slip Differentials and Racing Gearboxes. Without the intent to sell You anything, I suggest you take a look at www.drexler-motorsport.com for your LSD needs. Cossie was one of our former factory racers, so parts are most likely in stock. Please nobody take offense of this post because the product that is being enquired about is produced by the company I work for. This is strictly by accident and this post an intent to help, rather than sell!!!!
