NFPA Water Curtain

NFPA Water Curtain

NFPA Water Curtain

(OP)
Hello everybody!

Can you please guide me in how to size a water cannon to provide indirect exposure protection for a fuel tank placed inside a dike? NFPA15 describes rate of application for direct exposure protection only (10.2 lpm per m2 of tank surface). By "indirect" I mean that the cannon will operate creating a curtain between two identical tanks, when one is on fire to protect the other. It is a local authority's request.

Thank you in advance!

RE: NFPA Water Curtain

Calculate the exposed surface area of the target tank. Depending on geometry and obstructions it is reasonable to assume that a single fire stream nozzle can protect 33-50% of the exposed surface area of the target tank surface.

Multiply the discharge density required by NFPA 15 times the exposed surface area of the target tank that can be protected by one nozzle to determine the required flow.

Thank you. This is exactly what I did on my own. Unfortunately I come up with a huge (for the existing pump) water demand. In any case, I cannot see a different approach.
