Flexible Cables/Cords
Flexible Cables/Cords
(OP)
I've been in cable manufacturing industry almost a year, and i still don't know what is the differences between flexible cable and flexible cord. Can anyone help to clarify this to me?
We have been manufacturing flexible cord up to 2.5sq.mm 4 cores for sometime. Recently, my boss wanted me to check the specification for the 10 sq.mm and 16 sq.mm flexible cable. When i checked for the specification through IEC 60227, 1 to 7, there was nothing related to it. Please help me to this, as i'm running out idea.
Thanks in advance.

Just like rope and say; hawser.
It may even depend on the company selling it as to when they shift the description. That's often the case when you search high and low for some spec like that and never find it, or can't nail it down.

When terms referred to wires; Cable is a composite of individually insulated wires that runs on a cable tray or at a specific application such as overhead cranes and winches. Cord is just a a support or external covering or protection of a certain object, in your case a wire. This often use in portable electrical equipments and appliances.

cable; Permanently or semi permanently installed. Permanently connected. May be rated up to several thousand volts,
cord; May be subject to movement when in use. Often connected with a plug. Usually but not always 12AWG or less. Usually used to connect a portable appliance or tool. Usually rated at 150 or 300 volts. May be rated as high as 600 volts.
There is a lot of overlap and many exceptions.
The Canadian code uses both terms, but does not define either term.

cable; A conductor with insulation, or a stranded conductor with or without insulation and other coverings (single-conductor cable) or a combination of conductors insulated from one another.(multiple-conductor cable)
cord; One or a group of flexible insulated conductors, enclosed in a flexible insulating covering and equipped with terminals.

Understand that the conceptual construction of flexible conductor for 10 sq.mm is 80 number of 0.40mm wires. I just wandering whether the construction of the 10 sq.mm is similar to 2.5 sq.mm flexible cable/cord, since there is no guide line for the IEC 60227-5.
