Framing hip roof with scissor trusses

Framing hip roof with scissor trusses

(OP)
Hi,

Are there any rules of thumb regarding placement of girder trusses when framing a hip roof with scissor trusses?

The roof pitch is 6:12, and the ceiling will probably be 3:12.  The span is 26', and the length of the building is 32'.  Snow load is 75 psf.

The picture below is just a quick sketch of the roof layout - just need a rough idea of where to put the girder trusses.

Thanks.

Usually in the 6' to 10' range - 8' probably most typical.  Check with a local truss mfg.

RE: Framing hip roof with scissor trusses

It would vary based on the heel and the truss designer. If you allowed a tall heel in the truss then shorter setbacks can be used. Adjusting the heel upwards 2-3" can be cost effective for everyone, just have to run your soffit returns at the typical frame height.

I would assume an 8' set back on that design. The 6' setback is a common no-snow load setback because of the usage of #3 grade lumber in the jacks and the primary usage of toe-nailed connectivity.

Has the architect considered running a dual pitch roof to bump the truss depth?
