hi there everybody,
I‘ll be thankful for any hints and information on progressive trends in finish machining.

thanks in advance

Ask a specific question, please.

Thank you for your concer.
Maybe this time it won‘t be an exact question again but I’d like to ask you which unconventional methods had taken place in finish machining recently or what innovations were implemented in traditional finish machining methods.
Thanks

RE: finish machining/superfinishing/honing etc

Ceramic cutting tool inserts, "hard turning", and "plunge milling" arrived "recently" in my life, maybe not in yours.

How long a paper is expected?

The paper is expected to be 30-50 pages.
Well the hard milling and hard turning kept me busy for today. Hard cutting itself is a science and the range of my paper surely couldn’t be enough for it:)  but it definitely should be mentioned in my paper.  The task is classification of finishing methods, describe them and then write about the progressive trends. Considering the range of paper,  I’ll have to describe each method in nutschell and then mention the latest trends.

Do come back and let us know how the paper turned out

....

after you graduate.

Thanks.

RE: finish machining/superfinishing/honing etc

I'll apologize off the bat as I'm in a really pissy mood today...

Hint: Get away from the computer, open up a phone book, and call your most local machine shop specializing in secondary operations/machining.  Google works too.  Talk to the owner, see if he/she will give you the time of day, and if so, ask to come in and discuss in person.  Take a digital camera if they'll let you.  And a big box of doughnuts for the tech/machinist they farm you off on.  You get hands on exposure, pictures of what you're looking for, a potential networking contact for the future...yadda yadda yadda.

Off my high horse now.  I got to listen to MBA classmates last night rip up the American mfg. industry...none of whom have any industry experience or working experience of course.  The prof also has a distaste for American industry and its slow progression towards being "socially responsible"...he has no working experience either.  I love academia.

RE: finish machining/superfinishing/honing etc

Yeah, but after you get the MBA, you'll get into a position where you can make a difference, and one day, you can rip off the MBA mask and say "Shazam!  I'm not really one of those mutant sleazoid MBAs you revile for good reason!  I'm actually a nice guy, and I actually know something useful!  Now, let's get started making things better!"

...  I just hope the mask comes off ...

CBN Grinding and Diamond Turning?

RE: finish machining/superfinishing/honing etc

They use cnc bamboo scrapers in Japan on tool-steel after EDM'ing.

Also that extrude-hone polymer stuff for holes.

Extrude Hone polymers are fun stuff.  The diamond particle mixes are great for getting the recast out of die cavities.  It's also great for blowing out the ends of die cavities when your operator is being unattentive.  =)

Spent a few hours today at my double disc grinder's shop.  That's a new trend as well: conventional grinding/lapping for size & flatness is moving towards better CBN/Diamond technology (and machine servomotor controls) to "fine grind" parts.  Less time, same accuracy in some cases as lapping, and much cleaner.  Google "fine grinding" for an explanation.

Seriously, I wasn't trying to be a braying donkey when I suggested you check out a local shop. A lot of small business people are passionate about what they do and are more than willing to help out somebody with an interest in their industry.
