If you are in possession of a draft copy of API 650 Proof 1 January 2007 - refer to:
3.1.5.2 under Vertical Shell Joints par b. - "shell courses shall be flush-stacked on the inside"
3.1.5.3 under Horizontal Shell Joints par b. - "abutting shell plates at horizontal joints shall have a common vertical centerline"

Question - do you find these paragraphs contradictory?

RE: Please offer your opinion

If 3.1.5.2 is talking about alignment at a vertical joint where one plate is thicker, and if 3.1.5.3 is talking about alignment of one course above the other, I don't see a contradiction.  It might help to reword things to make it more clear, though.

Thanks for your response.

Do you design tanks with shells of different thicknesses within the same course?

You might want to look at Proof #2 then re-ask your question.  Maybe something has changed.

RE: Please offer your opinion

I think I mis-read the original statement, which says "courses" will be aligned- I was thinking "Plates will be aligned".  And yes, that would be a contradition between the two sections.

Application where plates in a course vary would be flush manway insert plates under older version of the standard.

Thanks to all who replied. I have reviewed the 2nd draft as doct9960 suggested and the reference to flush-stacking has been removed.
