Some General BOM Questions

Some General BOM Questions

Some General BOM Questions

(OP)
1.  My BOM is too long for a "d" size print.  Is there a way to start a new set of columns to the right of the original BOM?  or any other solution?

2.  I want to show indented sub-assemblies, but not for everything.  Is it possible?

Thanks

RE: Some General BOM Questions

The only way I know of is to make it an Excel BOM.

RE: Some General BOM Questions

1) RMB on the BOM and select Split. You will then be given four options.

2) "Top level only", "Parts only" or "Indented assemblies" are the only options. Only one can be used per BOM.

cheers

RE: Some General BOM Questions

Don't put BOM's on the drawing if you have a PLM.

fcsuper,

Why should you not put a BOM on a drawing if you have a PLM?  How does the customer know what the balloons mean if you do not include any other documentation with the job?

RE: Some General BOM Questions

You reference the other docs on the dwg and send them with the dwg. I have been doing it that way for a long time. most companies like it that way because the BOM (or PLM info) can be used by other depts without sending the dwg.

This is the procedure our company uses currently.  We have a drawing in ACAD and a BOM created in Excel but they are not linked.  We are switching over to Solidworks and our initial thought is add the BOM's to the drawings and do away with the Excel BOM's.

If we went the route of PLM, is there an inexpensive PLM we could look into for a demo?

RE: Some General BOM Questions

rjason71,
Here is how we enter our BOMs.
Inserting SolidWorks Table BOM
Notes of interest: Do not use Excel based BOM’s. For drawings that have Excel based BOM’s, must be deleted from within the tree on all sheets before placing a SolidWorks Table BOM. When splitting the SolidWorks Table BOM each table becomes its own table. You can delete each table or you can delete the whole table in the tree. To move the table RMC (Right Mouse Click) the SolidWorks Table BOM. RMC (Right Mouse Click) on the BOM and use move. The standard SolidWorks BOM is: bom. The standard zero item & zero quantity SolidWorks BOM is: bom_Schematic. Remember to “Follow assembly order” and link all views to BOM.

1.    LMC (Left Mouse Click) on assembly view.
2.    Click Insert, Tables, Bill of Materials.
3.    Pick bom for Table Template.
4.    Check Table Anchor “Attach to anchor”.
5.    BOM Type Top level only.
6.    Configurations check Default.
7.    Part Configuration Grouping check “Display as one item number” and “Display all configurations of same part as one item”.
8.    Keep Missing Items is unchecked.
9.    Zero Quantity Display “Quantity of zero “0”.
10.    Item Numbers Start at: 1 and Increment: 1. Click OK.
11.    Now make sure you have “Follow assembly order” is checked, by RMC (Right Mouse Click) on the BOM.
12.    RMC (Right Mouse Click) on the row just below the D in zone D1, usually it will be item 30. Click “Split” then “Horizontal Above”.
13.    Move the split BOM and drag it to the left of the BOM above the title block.
14.    Now do the same thing again until the BOM is correct.
15.    When Splitting BOM on sheet 2, you can split the BOM at above 90. Delete table 1 thru 90. Then attach to anchor, using “Table Properties”.

RE: Some General BOM Questions

Nice one Bradley, I've also wondered how you can split it but have never got round to doing anything about it.
