Backflow Prevention

Backflow Prevention

Backflow Prevention

(OP)
Are there any codes or standards that require that backflow preventors are installed to ensure that water used for human consumption is separated from water that can potentionally be contaminated by chemical processes in industial applications.  Thanks for any help.

RE: Backflow Prevention

Around here - they make us put Backflow Preventers on residential lawn irrigation systems.....AND a plumber must inspect once a year!!

Based on what you have said - I would think you should do so - regardless of codes!!!

Part of being an Engineer is to Protect the Health and Welfare.......

So just do it!!!

MiketheEngineer,
I agree with what you have said.  The only reason I am asking for codes is it makes it easier to convince the tight pocket clients when I have them to back me up.  Thanks for your respones.

RE: Backflow Prevention

Might look at NSF ANSI Standard 61. I don't have a copy to confirm, though.

RE: Backflow Prevention

Tight pockets are always trying to save a nickel - when a dime will prevent future problems --- possibly forever.

Good luck!!

RE: Backflow Prevention

Yeah, local building codes address back flow and you could pull that out.  Osha's general duty clause will prevail.  There are rules in the clean water act are specific to drinking water or water that could be used to clean people or eating utensils if the plant has more than 8 people.

RE: Backflow Prevention

Local building codes typically require these...

In a process plant, the owner typically wants to isolate his potable water from that used by his process. A secondary backflow preventer is usually installed.

A "star" perhaps ???
