Linking into drawings

(OP)
I am trying to populate fields within a drawing automatically.

I carnt quite find the comand to do this. Help points me at a specific text button but it doesnt work in the background view.

Ideas?

RE: Linking into drawings

I'm assuming help pointed you to "property text" in the callout function.

If it has and you are still having the problem, what specific information, i.e. from what property of what file, are you trying to link to the background sheet?

RE: Linking into drawings

Hi,

when, for instance you have set the callout to show the
title of an item i.e. %{Title|R1} and placed this on a background
sheet then it will show "Error no reference". This will be
replaced by that information that the source part holds
within File --> FileProperties --> Summary --> Title. This
may be a space, however.

You must, however, use the Callout not the Text function
for this to work. This has already been mentioned by swertel

/Edit

To be added:

The error text will be replaced as soon as you place
the view of a part.

Right will try again today to see just what im doing wrong

RE: Linking into drawings

Hi guys,
In my opinion - not a good idea to use a space as the place holder for call-out text. I would use a # or - so that you can see them.
I've seen too many multiple copies of property text fields created on drawings because a space was used and users couldn't see them, especially inexperienced users.

bc.

RE: Linking into drawings

@beachcomber,

... tell it UGS, a space is the default value for those
items (all items with a pulldown) after installation.

RE: Linking into drawings

/Edit,

or change the normal.xxx to any desired default value. Also
possible is to use the propseed.txt to populate some
properties with a default value

Yay got it going. Thanks chaps.

Ok next thing is i want to have some set values that the user MUST fill in before saving the drawing. Ive looked at propseed to dot his and it seems ok for the drop down box in the custom section. However it would be nicer if i could have it layed out like the sumary tab. Any ideas? Also any ideas on how to make it so the user has to select something?

Also noticed a tick box for hardware part. what does this mean?

RE: Linking into drawings

There is no way to FORCE a user to fill in file properties before saving the file.  In your options, you can set a checkbox so the dialog box comes up at the initial save in order to remind the user, but that's it.  If you implement a PDM system like Insight or TeamCenter, then you can force properties to be filled out.

The checkbox for hardware part deals with upline drafting.  Specifically, do you hatch hardware items: bolts, screws, nuts, washers, within a section view or not?  Some standards don't, others do.  This checkbox allows you to control that at the part level instead of having to do so at the drawing level - when you may have dozens of the same fastener sectioned in a view and you have to individually turn off the hatch in each one.

RE: Linking into drawings

I've changed some compulsary file properties on a template to say "Required" as a prompt to users to put something in.

Hmm sounds like a good idea.

have yoy manages to get custom fields anywhere else appart from the cutom tab?

also any tips on transfering the data to access?

RE: Linking into drawings

When using the index referencing method ie. %{Title|R1} it does not allow for a multi-page draft.

Is there a way to show the property text for the part/assm that is currently being displayed on the draft view in a multi-page draft?
