I am creating a solid works libary from existing parts and assemblies already saved on our system. Will i be able to edit and ammend these new models without affecting the models and parts already saved on the system. Does any one have any tips or advice on this as i am relatively new to soild works

RE: solid works libary

I suggest anything saved into a library is correct and will not be edited. Anything edited will reflect on assy's it is used in.

RE: solid works libary

That's a loaded question, James. Are you going to save the existing parts/assemblies with new names/part numbers? Do you plan on having multiple copies of the same part/assembly?
If you're simply resaving the part/assembly to a new directory, you're opening yourself, and your company, up to major headaches. Multiple copies of the same part/assembly are bad ju-ju.
It sounds like you guys need a PDM system to help manage your files. Either that, or I completely missed what you were asking.

Thanks for your responses:

Sorry I was a bit vague, I am looking to save the existing parts and also having multiple copies of them, for different assemblys. Will i need to re-name all of these parts each time i use them for a different assembly?

RE: solid works libary

Why would you want to have multiple copies for different assemblies? If it is exactly the same part, simply have one copy. No need for multiple copies, thereby lessening the chances of hosing up multiple assemblies.
If it's different iterations of a part (1/4-20 x 1 vs. 1/4-20 x 1.5) then use configurations.
You can use the same part multiple times in multiple assemblies. Does this make sense?
From your second posting, you're heading down a dangerous path, especially if you're in a multi-user environment.

RE: solid works libary

There's no need to have "multiple copies" of your parts.  That's the whole point of creating a library isn't?.  All the files are in one location, and all assemblies reference the same parts.  You should not need to rename them, unless they are different, in that case you should have a new configuration or part model.
