Can someone describe the basic technique used in application of vanadium coating to Steel in the simplest possible way?

What kind of equipment, controls, safety precutions are required ?

How to test if the desired results have been achieved?

RE: Vanadium Coating application to steel

First, it is not really a vanadium coating.  Vanadium carbide forms as a diffusion layer in the near surface layer of the steel.  The general name of the process is TRD (thermo-reactive deposition and diffusion) or just TD (thermal diffusion).  The carbide layer is formed by the chemical combination of carbon atoms in the steel substrate and carbide-forming element atoms (V) in the treating reagent, usually in the form of a molten borax salt bath).  You can find a more information in ASM HANDBOOK Volume 4 Heat Treating or by clicking on the following link:
