All this talk of computers, what will work what won't work. Most your answers are in here by doing a search... but I do recommend Dell computers over any other computer. however you don't have to get a Dell to make SW work.

I have a generic computer we picked up for $600 2 years ago and we put our own VC in it and more memory... and SW runs great on it.

System specs:

2.4 Ghz P4 - single CPU
3 Gigs Ram
Quadro FX 1100 - 77.56 drivers
Western Digital IDE 140 GB
External HDD - Fantom Drive 120 GB
DVD burner
CD-ROM

This system runs SW fine... I support our customers on this machine... its not top of the line and I have had to open assemblies of about 5000 parts on it... it was slow, but that's only because my VC is only a mid-range card and the driver is old. I keep my system clean and I do routine maintenance on it every day when I start in the morning.

Yes there are better computers out there and if you want to pay the money or have bragging rights that's your call... but  if I were you I would shop for a system that will last for a couple of years, and a VC that will last for longer if possible.

But trying to see the future as to what is going to happen in technology in 2 years is beyond anyone IMO. People are going to see certain patterns, but no one can be totally certain. Who would have thought 5-10 years ago that would would need to run 3 Gigs of memory or more?
